The burning of forest biomass to produce electricity has grown due to the fact that this source has been tolerated as carbon neutral by the United Nations.

This policy framework allows nations to burn forest biomass instead of coal and not account for emissions to help them meet the carbon targets of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Current science identifies burning forest biomass as more harmful than burning coal, and that one of the best ways to stop climate change and sequester carbon is to allow forests to continue to grow. We look to the future and cannot ignore that what is happening is exactly what governments and pulp industries imposed: more eucalyptus, more fires, more abandonment, depopulation, climate changes, desertification, and loss of biodiversity. More monocultures of eucalyptus, invasives, and fast-growing species with a propensity for fire replace the native forest, accelerating this cycle. And the climate changes, becoming hotter, drier, with longer droughts and fewer rainy days. The desert is gaining ground. This is also the plan of governments and pulp industries. They have no other plan and reject any alternative.

Measures that don't reverse this cycle accelerate it. We need the forest as the first barrier against drought and desertification. For that, we have to change the landscape. Not in decades, but now. We must hold the pulp industries that brought us here accountable, The Navigator Company and Altri Florestal, and the leaders who rolled out the red carpet for them - from all parties. They didn't stop them and handed over the future of our country. We can no longer accept this. The pulp industries must pay for the destruction of the past and the present.

We also hold accountable the Portuguese companies that continue to worsen the climate crisis, like Galp and EDP, planning to continue their destructive and extractive activities for decades, profiting like never before and rejecting the necessary emissions cuts to stop climate chaos. It's urgent to ensure the needs of the people, environmental balance, and public health, not the same old businesses.

We need fewer ignitions and less burned area. That means having a complete forest registry of the national territory, and what's abandoned must be taken over by the State. The abandoned areas need to be managed, not by the current ineffective structures, but by an institution created for this purpose. The path followed for decades in rural Portugal has been in opposition to small landowners and rural, agricultural, and forest diversification, deliberately maintaining low prices and persistent poverty. A forest of the future must be built with direct state intervention, but from a state that rejects being in the hands of a industry devastating to the country, such as the pulp industry.

We need to "de-eucalyptize" Portugal. We need to remove 700 thousand hectares of eucalyptus plantations in the country this decade and transform these areas into resilient forests and woodlands that can withstand the hotter and drier future that the climate crisis has produced. We need to make this happen to halt the desert.

To help achieve this goal, we need a industry that dont use single use paper packaging. we have organizations like New ERA:

September 3nd, we took to the streets: "Protest for the Forest of the Future" -a protest in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Odemira, Figueira da Foz, Viseu, Pedrógão Grande, Ourém, Oliveira do Hospital, Arganil, Sertã, Cartaxo, Proença-a-Nova, Vila Nova de Poiares, and other territories because the promises and patches of recent years have never cut through the logic that brought us here and that will lead us, if we don't rebel, to surrender the territory we live in to become an area incapable of sustaining populations, incapable of defending lives. We take to the streets for a future far beyond the simple logic of economic and political cycles. Enough.
